The Bear Chase, a story using the beginning the group I was in made during english lesson.
The intense heat from the rays of the sun shone down on to the vast variety of tress in Algonquin Provincial Park. A slight gust of wind blew past the trees resulting in the rustling of the fallen leaves.
I and my friends were there camping to celebrate our secondary school graduation. We were carrying heavy bags loaded with camping equipment, food and toiletries. Every step I took, I felt a strain on my shoulders.
All of a sudden, I heard footsteps together with the rustling of leaves and I stopped momentarily. My friend told me it was just my imagination and to continue walking. I did so but I heard another sound. This time, the whole group stopped. We skimmed around the surroundings until we saw a tall shrub swaying unnaturally.
I stood rooted to the ground for a while and nothing much happened. I looked behind and found out my friends had gone without me! I slowly looked behind me, the shrub moved again. I was very nervous and curious at the same time. Curiosity took over me for a while. I took a step forward but another few steps back. I could not take the risk of finding out what was behind.
I took a deep breath and then attempted to get as far away from the shrub, and whatever that was behind it. I heard the shrub the third time. I stopped again and looked behind. A soon as my eye saw bush, a bear lunged out of it!
I did not have any option but to run, I dropped my backpack and ran away as fast as I could. Unfortunately, I was a slow runner. The bear was catching up on me very quick. I saw a water large source behind the trees in front of me, a lake!
I started dashing, beyond my physical limit. When running I felt the adrenaline. It was surprisingly nice to run. When I reached the opening of the forest and I stopped, I found myself in a cliff! The bear was quite far. I thought it was faster than me?
I crouched and closed my eyes with my sweaty hands. Just when I thought it was the end of me. I heard a loud gun shot. I opened my eyes. I saw a man donned in a khaki-colored uniform, beside him was a tranquilized bear.
‘Are you alright?’ he asked.
I stood up again, hitting the dirt off my shirt, I replied, ‘Yes, thank you.’
‘Follow me.’ The man, who I guessed was probably a forest ranger, told me. A quarter of an hour later, we reached my campsite my friends set up when I was away. I was relieved. My friend asked me questions.
The ranger interrupted us. He looked at me saying. ‘You were very fast over there running. I did not see a person outrun a bear before.’
I smiled when I heard that. I looked at my friends and said something I would not usually say, ‘I think I should try running!’
